Formulated and prepared in France

The search for the perfect substrate is at the core of our philosophy. Over more than two years, we researched, tested, and refined multiple formulations to create substrates tailored to the specific needs of each plant. This in-depth work was carried out between Thailand and France, under real growing conditions, with extensive testing focused on drainage, aeration, water retention, and root health. The final formulation of our substrates is completed in France. All our substrates are then prepared and packaged in our greenhouse in the Paris region, under strict quality control, ensuring reliable, high-performance, and long-lasting growing media.

Description & Information

How our Philodendron substrate works

This substrate has been specifically formulated to meet the needs of Philodendron plants and related species (climbing aroids with aerial roots).

Its composition provides an optimal balance between drainage, aeration, and moisture retention, which is essential for healthy root development in Philodendron plants, whether juvenile or well established.

Thanks to its airy and stable structure, the roots benefit from excellent air circulation while maintaining controlled moisture levels.

This effectively limits the risks of excess water, root rot, and fungal diseases, while promoting strong and long-lasting growth.

A substrate inspired by the natural habitat of Philodendron

Philodendron are native to humid tropical rainforests, where they grow in organic-rich, light, and consistently well-draining environments, often along forest edges or in epiphytic conditions.

This substrate is directly inspired by these natural conditions in order to recreate an environment close to their original habitat, while remaining perfectly suited for container cultivation.

Philodendron care recommendations

Water when the surface of the substrate begins to dry, making sure that no water remains standing at the bottom of the pot. A simple finger test helps assess moisture levels.

Philodendron thrive in bright indirect light, good air circulation, and a slightly humid atmosphere.

Regular but moderate fertilization, combined with a suitable substrate, promotes well-formed foliage, balanced internodal spacing, and harmonious growth.

How to use the Philodendron substrate

Gently remove the old substrate from around the roots by lightly pressing the pot to release the root ball. Rinse the roots with lukewarm water to remove remaining residues and inspect them, trimming damaged parts if necessary.

Place a layer of substrate at the bottom of the pot, position the plant in the center, then gradually fill in around the roots. The base of the plant should be just covered.

Lightly firm the substrate without compacting it, then water thoroughly to encourage healthy root establishment.

Care instructions

20% buffered coco coir enriched with Trichoderma, providing a stable base, controlled water retention, and active biological support for the root system

20% hydroponic clay pebbles, ensuring substrate stability and consistent moisture management

15% fine-grade maritime pine bark, promoting mix aeration and root oxygenation

15% biochar, contributing to natural purification of the growing medium and microbiological balance

10% buffered coconut chips, improving overall structure and substrate flexibility

10% coarse pumice, ensuring efficient drainage and smooth water circulation

10% perlite, reducing compaction and facilitating air–water exchange

FAQ

Would Philodendron substrate be suitable for my plant?

Most Philodendrons and related plants originate from tropical rainforests, where they thrive in light, well-aerated, and naturally draining substrates rich in organic matter. This substrate is directly inspired by these natural conditions to recreate an environment close to their original habitat, while being perfectly suited for pot cultivation and healthy long-term growth.

When should I repot my plant?

  • Roots growing out of the bottom of the pot
  • A substrate that dries out very quickly between waterings
  • A plant that has become too heavy or unstable, and tends to tip over
  • Roots that push the plant upwards and out of the pot
  • Repotting is recommended every 1 to 2 years , depending on the plant's growth.

How long can the substrate be stored?

A sealed substrate , stored in its original bag, dry and away from light, can be kept for 12 to 18 months while preserving its physical and biological properties. Once opened , the substrate remains fully usable for 6 to 9 months , provided it is properly resealed and stored in a dry environment.

A used substrate (already potted and watered) remains effective for 9 to 18 months , depending on the plant, watering frequency, and growing conditions. Beyond this period, the structure and biological activity gradually decrease; it is then recommended to repot or renew the substrate every 1 to 2 years to maintain an optimal root environment. 🌿

How much substrate do I need for Philodendron?

Use the jar volume calculator available on the product page to determine the quantity you need.

What should I do if my plant doesn't seem happier with its new substrate?

If your plant doesn't seem to be thriving in this substrate, please don't hesitate to contact us . We'll help you diagnose the situation (substrate, watering, light, environment) and find the best solution to ensure healthy and sustainable growth for your plant 🌿
