Formulated and prepared in France 🇫🇷

A substrate developed specifically for Homalomena.

For more than two years, we tested and refined different formulations between Thailand and France under real growing conditions.

The goal: meet the needs of Homalomena's fine and sensitive root systems with a formula capable of maintaining consistent moisture while preserving excellent aeration.

This new formula relies especially on a high proportion of perlite and buffered coco coir to create a light, even and easy-to-manage growing medium.

Each mix is then prepared, quality-checked and packed in our greenhouse near Paris.

🇫🇷 Formulated, prepared and quality-checked by our team in France.

How to use the Homalomena substrate

Homalomena appreciate a fresh, slightly moist growing medium that remains well oxygenated.

Their fine root systems need a good balance of moisture retention, lightness and drainage without keeping the roots in constantly waterlogged conditions.

1
Carefully remove the old substrate and inspect the roots while avoiding damage to the finest roots.
2
Choose a pot suited to the root volume with good drainage.
3
Add a first layer of substrate and position the plant without burying the crown too deeply.
4
Gradually fill around the roots and lightly stabilise the mix without compacting it.
5
Water after repotting, then keep the substrate slightly moist but never waterlogged.

Always adjust watering frequency according to temperature, light, ambient humidity, season and pot size.

💧 The right balance: consistent moisture from the coco, with plenty of air provided by perlite and the structural components.

Homalomena substrate composition

A light and balanced formula designed to maintain consistent moisture while preserving excellent oxygenation around the roots.

40%
Perlite
Keeps the mix very light, increases porosity and reduces compaction around the roots.
25%
Buffered coco coir
Provides a light organic base and helps maintain consistent moisture without making the substrate overly dense.
10%
Maritime pine bark
Reinforces the structure of the mix and supports airflow around the root system.
10%
Buffered coconut husk chips
Create additional air spaces and provide a coarser, long-lasting structure.
10%
Hydroponic clay pebbles
Stabilise the mix and support even air and moisture circulation.
5%
Horticultural biochar
Its porous structure complements the mix and helps maintain a stable rooting environment.

WHAT THEY THINK

We changed their substrate. Apparently, their roots had a few things to say.

M

Monstera

★★★★★ roots finally breathing

Finally, a substrate with enough air. My roots had almost forgotten what breathing felt like.

A

Alocasia

★★★★★ demanding but satisfied

Moist, but not waterlogged. Airy, but not dry. Finally, someone read my requirements.

A

Anthurium

★★★★★ root connoisseur

Drainage, moisture, oxygen… my aerial roots are asking if they can move in too.

P

Philodendron

★★★★★ ready to climb

A coarse substrate, plenty of air around the roots… great, now give me a two-metre pole.

H

Homalomena

★★★★★ moisture approved

It stays fresh without turning into a swimming pool. I really wasn't asking for much.

TC

Baby Plant

★★★★★ fresh out of tissue culture

Yesterday I was in a flask. Today I have my own pot. Life moves fast.

FAQ

Would Homalomena substrate be suitable for my plant?

Homalomena and related plants originate from tropical rainforests, primarily in Southeast Asia, where they thrive in the soil in substrates rich in organic matter, cool, shady, well-aerated, and naturally draining. This substrate is directly inspired by these natural conditions to recreate an environment close to their original habitat, while remaining perfectly suited to pot cultivation and healthy, stable, and sustainable long-term growth.

When should I repot my plant?

  • Roots growing out of the bottom of the pot
  • A substrate that dries out very quickly between waterings
  • A plant that has become too heavy or unstable, and tends to tip over
  • Roots that push the plant upwards and out of the pot
  • Repotting is recommended every 1 to 2 years , depending on the plant's growth.

How long can the substrate be stored?

A sealed substrate , stored in its original bag, dry and away from light, can be kept for 12 to 18 months while preserving its physical and biological properties. Once opened , the substrate remains fully usable for 6 to 9 months , provided it is properly resealed and stored in a dry environment.

A used substrate (already potted and watered) remains effective for 9 to 18 months , depending on the plant, watering frequency, and growing conditions. Beyond this period, the structure and biological activity gradually decrease; it is then recommended to repot or renew the substrate every 1 to 2 years to maintain an optimal root environment. 🌿

How much Homalomena substrate do I need?

Use the jar volume calculator available on the product page to determine the quantity you need.

What should I do if my plant doesn't seem happier with its new substrate?

If your plant doesn't seem to be thriving in this substrate, please don't hesitate to contact us . We'll help you diagnose the situation (substrate, watering, light, environment) and find the best solution to ensure healthy and sustainable growth for your plant 🌿
