Base substrate / Active drainage layer (5L)
Ideal for:
All types of indoor plants
Every thriving plant begins with an exceptional substrate. Base substrate specifically designed as an active drainage layer for indoor plant cultivation. Its formulation combining clay pebbles and biochar ensures optimal drainage, constant aeration, and controlled moisture management. It promotes strong and active root development, limits excess water, naturally protects against root imbalance, and creates a stable, long-lasting environment at the base of the pot throughout the plantâs growth.

Formulated and prepared in France

The search for the perfect substrate is at the core of our philosophy. Over more than two years, we researched, tested, and refined multiple formulations to create substrates tailored to the specific needs of each plant. This in-depth work was carried out between Thailand and France, under real growing conditions, with extensive testing focused on drainage, aeration, water retention, and root health. The final formulation of our substrates is completed in France. All our substrates are then prepared and packaged in our greenhouse in the Paris region, under strict quality control, ensuring reliable, high-performance, and long-lasting growing media.
Description & Information

How our base substrate works This substrate has been specifically formulated to be used as an active drainage layer, placed at the bottom of the pot and representing approximately 10 to 20% of the total pot volume. Its composition provides a precise balance between drainage, aeration, and moisture management, which is essential to protect the root systems of all indoor plants, including the most sensitive ones. Thanks to its stable and highly aerated structure, excess water is quickly evacuated while air circulates freely at the base of the pot. This effectively reduces the risks of standing water, root rot, and fungal imbalance, while creating a healthy and long-lasting root environment. An active drainage layer inspired by natural conditions In their natural habitats, many plants grow in stratified soils where water drains naturally and roots benefit from excellent oxygenation. This base substrate is inspired by those conditions to recreate, at the bottom of the pot, a draining, aerated, and biologically balanced environment perfectly suited for container cultivation. How to use the base substrate Place a layer of the base substrate representing approximately 10 to 20% of the pot height. Then add your main growing substrate on top and install the plant. This active drainage layer helps secure watering, improves substrate longevity, and promotes healthy root development over the long term.

FAQ
Would the Active Drainage Layer be suitable for my plant?
Plants, whether tropical or temperate, naturally thrive in stratified soils where water drains freely and roots benefit from excellent oxygenation at the base. This active drainage layer is directly inspired by these natural conditions to recreate a stable, aerated, and naturally draining environment at the bottom of the pot. It protects the root system from excess water, promotes healthy moisture management, and contributes to balanced, sustainable, and secure growth for all types of potted plants.
When should I repot my plant?
- Roots growing out of the bottom of the pot
- A substrate that dries out very quickly between waterings
- A plant that has become too heavy or unstable, and tends to tip over
- Roots that push the plant upwards and out of the pot
- Repotting is recommended every 1 to 2 years , depending on the plant's growth.
How long can the substrate be stored?
A sealed substrate , stored in its original bag, dry and away from light, can be kept for 12 to 18 months while preserving its physical and biological properties. Once opened , the substrate remains fully usable for 6 to 9 months , provided it is properly resealed and stored in a dry environment.
A used substrate (already potted and watered) remains effective for 9 to 18 months , depending on the plant, watering frequency, and growing conditions. Beyond this period, the structure and biological activity gradually decrease; it is then recommended to repot or renew the substrate every 1 to 2 years to maintain an optimal root environment. đż
How much Active Drainage Layer do I need?
